What the report looks like

An extract from the report for the free retail-banking case. The figures below are that case’s real ground truth; the candidate answers are an illustrative composite, not a real customer’s transcript.

Arithmetic check

Every number you said · 6 checks · 4 on target
“2.4bn − 1.9bn = 500 million” checks out
“loan losses up about $50M” within tolerance Ground truth $50M · cited turn 9.
“(500 − 450) / 500 = 1.0%” off by 100× Likely a percentage-as-fraction mix-up. Correct value 10%.
“default rates roughly doubled — call it 9%” off target Ground truth 7.4%. Direction right, figure loose.
“that’s 58% down on profit” within tolerance
“unsecured book is maybe 12% of lending” contradicts turn 6 You said 18% on turn 6 and 12% on turn 14. Both are in the report; only one can be right.

Scores

DimensionScoreWhat drove it
Framework structure78MECE and stated up front; missed the competitive branch entirely.
Quantitative logic54Two of six figures wrong, one a 100× unit error carried into the recommendation.
Business intuition71Identified underwriting as the likely culprit early, then under-tested it.
Executive synthesis62Recommendation was clear but rested on the incorrect margin figure.

Ground truth, revealed

Profit fell 58% on flat revenue. The cause is on the cost side and it is narrow: an unsecured personal-loan product launched eighteen months ago under relaxed underwriting. Its default rate is roughly double the rest of the book, and the resulting loan-loss provision — about $50M — accounts for nearly the whole decline. The recommendation the case is built around is to tighten underwriting on that one product rather than to cut cost across the bank.
